    10 data security enhancements to consider as your employees return to the office

    77% of IT decision makers across the United States and Canada believe their companies are likely to face a data breach within the next three years according to survey results released by Adastra.

    Survey respondents ranked data security as the biggest game changer in 2023 as companies continue to bolster their cybersecurity preparedness—68% of managers surveyed say their companies have a cybersecurity division and a further 18% report they are in the process of creating one. Only 6% of respondents reported having no cybersecurity division.

    “The increase in data breach incidents across North America is troubling and must be prioritized as employees continue to return in-person to their corporate offices,” said Kuljit Chahal, Practice Lead, Data Security at Adastra North America.

    “During the pandemic many employees were hired virtually and, in combination with long absences from offices, introductions to and re-familiarization with security protocols will be critical,” Chahal added.

    Awareness of data security best practices among employees is essential—according to the 2022 Verizon Data Breach Investigations Report, 82% of data breaches are caused by human error and companies of all sizes are at risk.

    “In our role as data security experts, we have found that some companies, especially smaller ones, can be lulled into a false sense of security believing that perpetrators will not bother with them­—this is absolutely not the case,” said Chahal.

    “The results of this survey should serve as a reminder that companies of all sizes must invest in data security protection, resources and education, particularly as we return to in-office activities,” he said.

    The cost of a breach can be significant and far more than what an audit from a data security firm will cost. According to Statista, the average cost of a data breach in the United States grew to $9.4 million in 2022, up from $9 million in the previous year.

    A Secure User Authentication Method – Planning is More Important than Ever

    When considering authentication providers, many organizations consider the ease of configuration, ubiquity of usage, and technical stability. Organizations cannot always be judged on those metrics alone. There is an increasing need to evaluate company ownership, policies and the stability, or instability, that it brings.

    How Leadership Change Affects Stability

    In recent months, a salient example is that of Twitter. The Twitter platform has been around since 2006 and is used by millions worldwide. With many users and a seemingly robust authentication system, organizations used Twitter as a primary or secondary authentication service.

    Inconsistent leadership and policies mean the stability of a platform is subject to change, which is especially true with Twitter as of late. The ownership change to Elon Musk precipitated widespread changes to staffing and policies. Due to those changes, a large portion of staff was let go, but this included many individuals responsible for the technical stability of the platform.

    This culminated in an outage of Twitter’s SMS two-factor authentication. With delayed or non-existent texts, many users could not log in to Twitter. This affected systems that relied on Twitter as their primary and secondary authentication provider.

    Not limited to authentication issues, with the changes come a renewed concern over the safety and privacy of user data. Twitter has been under an FTC consent decree from past problems surrounding user data, and a good portion of the staff responsible for compliance has been let go. Even if the authentication provider stays up, it may leave an organization in an uncomfortable position regarding the state of their stored on Twitter’s servers.

    Strategies for Authentication Service Stability

    Using a platform’s well-established and robust authentication service can save organizations time and money over implementing their own. Cutting out third-party platforms is typically not feasible or even recommended. Instead, proactive planning is essential if an organization needs to maintain stability and security with its authentication platforms.

    It’s crucial to ask and answer the following questions when considering how your organization’s authentication service would handle potential disruptions in authentication providers.

    • Does the organization’s authentication service support multiple identity providers?
    • If a provider is unavailable, is there a backup provider, and how quickly can providers be switched?
    • What is the disruption to users? Will they be logged out of current sessions, or will it be seamless and take effect on the next login?
    • If MFA is configured, what are the available options? Are there multiple methods to verify the user, and if one is removed, does that degrade authentication services?

    If an organization chose Twitter as a source of two-factor authentication, it might find that recent events indicate a necessary change. If so, the switch could be made easier if multiple MFA platforms were already available and configured.

    If an organization can choose the active authentication system based on current needs, then even the problems shown with a major platform such as Twitter would be mitigated, and the organization’s users would see little change.

    Offering Multiple MFA Options

    To understand how this works in practice, one can look to Microsoft. With Azure, once MFA is configured, you can offer several options or limit the available verification methods. Instead of an SMS, you could receive a phone call or use a hardware token. If you offer all 3, you won’t be locked out of your account if a specific service is unavailable.

    Nearly identical is Google Workspace, where you can offer one or more authentication options. If you enable more than one, you will not lose the ability to authenticate your users in the event of a service failure. Both Microsoft and Google could be more flexible. Neither offers the full range of options to integrate with services like Twitter.

    An example of a system that offers a myriad of options is Okta. By enabling Social Logins, you can allow users to log in via popular services such as Facebook or Twitter. But it’s recommended that you back that social login with an MFA configuration that could include such options as SMS, authenticator applications, or a hardware device such as a Yubikey.

    Mitigating Authentication Instability with Specops uReset

    An organization may find itself uncomfortable with changes to its authentication provider. If so, implementing a product, such as Specops uReset, takes the reliance on a problematic authentication platform off the table, at least for password resets.

    The flexibility to choose from multiple weighted authentication providers makes a problematic provider easy to remove while leaving the ability for users and service desk workers to reset a password. Change the weighting to offset the loss of the previously used provider, and your users can quickly get back to work!

    Since multiple providers are in use, you can have end-users utilize a combination of trusted identification services to perform self-service password resets without worrying about losing access to a previously critical authentication service.

    Tech in 2023: 6 new priorities for your shortlist

    Tech executives expect their technology budgets to rise during the next year, according to predictions from analysts and other surveys, despite the economic headwinds. ZDNET spoke to tech executives and industry insiders to find out, as spending continuing to rise, where digital leaders are looking to prioritize their investments in 2023.

    1. Using the cloud as a foundation for machine learning

    Barry Panayi, chief data and insight officer at John Lewis Partnership, believes the big trend next year in most traditional businesses is going to be about getting the most from the cloud.

    “It’s a 10-year-old conversation. Until now, many people have treated the cloud like a huge hard drive, but it gives you huge capabilities,” he says.

    Panayi says one example is how companies can create significant value by using cloud-stored data as a foundation for MLOps, which aims to make machine-learning workflows across an organisation more effective.

    “Proper, automated MLOps – certainly in retail and fast-moving consumer goods – can be a game changer, especially as people are shopping more online. We’re famous for our John Lewis shops, but the shift online has been so big that having everything relating to data moving in near or real time is big deal for us.”

    2. Get ready for the metaverse

    Lisa Heneghan, global chief digital officer at consultant KPMG, recognises that the metaverse is overhyped. However, she also believes business leaders will need to start getting to grips with this fast-moving area of tech in 2023.

    “In some ways, I hate saying the metaverse will be the next big trend, and I don’t think the metaverse and Web 3.0 is going to come to life in the next year. But I do think we need to change the way we’re thinking, so that we’re understanding how the world will change during the next five years.”

    Heneghan says she looks at the way younger people are already comfortable with increasingly immersive experiences and suggests companies must get to grips with the metaverse now – something many failed to do in the past with other big trends.

    “I remember when cloud came and everybody was asking: ‘What’s cloud?’ We can’t take as long as it took to get things going with the cloud. With the metaverse, we have to get our act together. We have to understand it and start to test and see how that technology might make a difference to us.”

    3. Ensuring data is reliable and explainable

    David Charnley, head of transformation and strategy at NatWest, points to a range of key data-led concerns, such as open banking, artificial intelligence and regulation: “All of those are important trends and activities that we need to keep a really close eye on.”

    Charnley says another key issue is demand for talent, particularly when companies like his are trying to grow their data practices: “I think the trend that we’re seeing is scarcity in the labour market for data professionals and I see that only getting tighter. I think that’s a feature of the UK market, the market in India, and elsewhere too.”

    As his bank continues to look to do exciting things with the information it holds, Charnley says it’s also important to keep an eye on data ethics and potential bias. He recognises machine-learning models can have unintended bias – and dealing with those challenges will be a big priority for 2023.

    “Getting to a place where we’re able to explain and monitor models to ensure that there isn’t a drift or bias in the way that we do business is a part of delivering great data propositions. And that’s something that we are really investing time and effort in right now at NatWest.”

    4. Getting the most out of the cloud

    Bev White, CEO at recruiter Nash Squared, is another expert who says the big priority for most digital chiefs is going to be getting the most from their investments in the cloud.

    “There’s no doubt about it,” she says. “Talk to any tech leader and it’s the first or second thing they talk about. Every time, this is where they’re putting their big investments – and they’ll be continuing to do so for the next few years.”

    White says this investment in cloud will be supported by a commitment to cybersecurity investments.

    “The more exposed we make our businesses online, the more risk we carry,” she says. “And while we hear every week about lots of examples of cybercrime and ransomware and all these other things that are going on, I’m sure we don’t hear a lot about many of the attacks. So, we’re expecting the requirement to invest more in cyber to continue.”

    5. Dealing with cybersecurity concerns

    A strong focus on proactive and preventative cyber measures is something that chimes with Andy Pocock, IT director at TrustFord, who says his priority is simple: keeping data safe and secure.

    “I think the big trend will be security and addressing that concern. It’s certainly the focus for me. To just ensure that I’ve got the capabilities and the protections in place to protect my company’s data and my customers’ data,” he says.

    “You’ve only got to go and read the National Cyber Strategy and you’ve only got to listen to the National Cyber Security Centre. The cyber threat is ever-evolving, and it’s going to get bigger.”

    6. Using the IoT to take control

    Ed Higgs, group director of IT shared services at pest control specialist Rentokil Initial, says his organisation will be looking to make more of the Internet of Things (IoT) and the data from connected devices.

    His company uses IoT-connected traps to spot signs of infestation automatically, which allows the business to take prompt preventative action before the problem worsens.

    “We’ve got millions of connected devices out there. For us, it’s going to be more IoT, much more control over that endpoint, and much more functionality connected to that endpoint,” says Higgs.

    “We’ve moved from just having a SIM card within a device, which sends an SMS, to adding a camera to the device, so that when it sends an SMS, it can also send the details of what it is that they’ve caught. So the management, security and compliance around those endpoint devices is going to be big for us.”

    The Top 4 Internet Of Things Trends In 2023

    The Internet of Things (IoT) is a term that’s come to be used to describe the ever-growing networks of physical objects that are online, connected, and capable of communicating and sharing information with us and with each other.

    Hackers Use CAPTCHA Bypass Techniques to Create Five GitHub Accounts Every Minute

    Researchers from Unit 42 analyze Automated Libra, the group of cloud threat actors responsible for PurpleUrchin, the freejacking campaign.

    It is been observed that Automated Libra has been refining its methods to profit from cloud platform resources used for cryptocurrency mining.

    Threat actors abuse free cloud resources by using a new CAPTCHA-solving technique, more aggressive CPU resource utilization for mining, and a mix of “freejacking” and the “Play and Run” method.

    PURPLEURCHIN was initially identified in October 2022 when Sysdig disclosed that the attackers scaled their operations by opening 30 GitHub accounts, 2,000 Heroku accounts, and 900 Buddy accounts.

    Play and Run Tactics

    Reports say PurpleUrchin threat actors used Play and Run strategies, consuming cloud resources while avoiding paying the cloud platform vendor’s bill for such resources.

    Actors from PurpleUrchin carried out these Play and Run activities by setting up and using fake accounts and using fake or perhaps stolen payment cards. These fake accounts had an outstanding balance. $190 USD was one of the greatest outstanding balances discovered.

    “We suspect the unpaid balances in other fake accounts and cloud services used by the actors could have been much larger due to the scale and breadth of the mining operation”, researchers

    The Specifics of Automated Libra 

    The threat actor uses automated campaigns to create new accounts on the platforms and run cryptocurrency miners in containers by abusing continuous integration and deployment (CI/CD) service providers like GitHub, Heroku, Buddy.works, and Togglebox.

    Unit 42 found that the threat actor traded the cryptocurrency they had mined on a variety of trading platforms, including ExchangeMarket, crex24, Luno, and CRATEX, as well as using containerized components for mining.

    Researchers say due to its easier account setup process, GitHub was most likely used by the actors. The actors were able to take advantage of a flaw in the GitHub CAPTCHA check.

    Notably, after engaging in a Play and Run strategy where each account would demand computing resources, threat actors finally failed to pay their bills for each of the GitHub accounts.

    PurpleUrchin generated more than 130,000 accounts across numerous virtual private server (VPS) providers and cloud service providers, suggesting that this is a typical operating practice for them (CSPs).

    The threat actors transform CAPTCHA images into their RGB equivalents using ImageMagic’s “convert” tool and then use the “identify” tool to determine each image’s Red channel skewness.

    The “identify” tool’s output value is used to rank the photos in ascending order. The automated tool uses the table to select the image that tops the list, which is usually the right one.

    This system demonstrates Automated Libra’s commitment to enhancing operational effectiveness by raising the number of GitHub accounts they can create each minute.

    “It is important to note that Automated Libra has designed its infrastructure to take full advantage of CD/CI tools,” the researchers concluded.

    “This has become easier to achieve over time as traditional VSPs diversify their service portfolios to include cloud-related services. It’s easier for attackers because they don’t need it to deploy the application.”

    Cybersecurity Trends: IBM’s Predictions for 2023

    As with many other aspects of life and business, 2022 held fewer overall surprises in cybersecurity than in recent years — thank goodness. Instead, many trends brewing over the past few years began to take clearer form. Some were unexpected, and many were predictable, but all are important to consider when making plans for security in 2023.

    What Overall Trends Did We See in 2022?

    Ransomware continued to stay in the headlines in 2022. The share of breaches caused by ransomware grew 41% in the last year and took 49 days longer than the average breach to identify and contain. Ransomware gangs continued reemerging as new groups with the same key players after an arrest or major attack. And ransomware gangs are growing even more lucrative and powerful by selling ransomware as a service.

    On a positive note, zero trust evolved from being a new concept to a best practice. As hybrid work became a way of life, more organizations have started adopting zero trust frameworks– meaning all users, apps and devices that request access are assumed to be unauthorized until proven otherwise. Organizations with a zero trust approach deployed saved nearly $1 million in average breach costs compared to organizations without zero trust deployed.

    Ransomware Attacks are Rebounding — But Not for All

    Cyber criminals look for organizations or industries teetering at the edge and then make their move to tip them over. Last year, we saw that with manufacturing — a strained industry viewed as the backbone of supply chains. With the distinct possibility of a global recession on the horizon, we expect to see ransomware attacks spike in 2023. However, larger organizations in regions heavily impacted during the ransomware boom are the most prepared for this wave after investing time and money in fighting back.

    Opportunities for Hackers-for-Hire Skyrocket Amid a Global Recession

    As operators offer new tools that dramatically lower the barrier of entry for less experienced and less technical cyber criminals, the cyber crime-as-a-service ecosystem may balloon in the year ahead. If the global economy faces a downturn, hackers-for-hire may emerge in search of quick and easy pay. We expect the biggest rise to be across Europe, considering geopolitical tensions and a challenging winter ahead.

    Zero Trust Got 99 (Implementation) Problems

    Now that it’s finally more than just a buzzword, security teams will accelerate zero trust adoption plans in 2023 — and make several missteps along the way.     ICS/SCADA systems are essential to the daily operations of industrial manufacturers. Due to their importance, these systems are a top target for attackers. Yet while the tactics and techniques required to social engineer ICS systems differ from IT, the impact can be even more detrimental — going so far as the possible loss of life. Social engineers are already beginning to advance their techniques and tactics to more successfully gain access to these vulnerable systems. We anticipate social engineering to accelerate — with even more success — in the year ahead.

    Adversaries Sidestep New Security Technologies

    Almost as fast as the cybersecurity industry releases new security tools, adversaries evolve their techniques to circumvent them. This year will be no different. We expect to see cyber criminals set their sights more specifically on MFA and EDR technologies. With some attackers having succeeded at circumventing non-phishing-resistant MFA this past year — and more organizations relying on it than ever before — this technology will grow as a top target next year. Similarly, adversaries have been honing EDR evasion techniques. We expect to see a massive spike in the number of EDR evasion tools for sale on the dark web.

    Specialists Will Double-Back to Generalists to Secure the Cloud in 2023

    Hiring the talent required to secure the cloud will be a challenge for security leaders in 2023. One of the greatest hurdles stems from the large number of people needed in very niche, specialized roles. With so many companies increasingly going all-in on the cloud — and a skills crisis that’s worsening year by year — the solution to the skills gap lies in cybersecurity generalists. Organizations will recruit more generalists with successful track records, and build internal teams by reskilling specialists back to generalists.

    Automation Will Help Defenders Protect the “Moat”

    With data being more dispersed than ever the concept of protecting the “moat” is no longer a successful strategy — we now have too much surface area to cover. We’ll see more automated protection of the “moat”, so defenders can focus more time on detecting adversaries earlier and responding more effectively.

    Credential-Stealing Will Continue to Rise

    Cyber criminals will continue to leverage large caches of leaked/stolen credentials to devastating effect. Many consumers and businesses are gradually migrating to password managers, passwordless and hardware identity tokens. However, the vast majority of the population continues to reuse credentials or variations of credentials between environments, systems or sites. Next year, we’ll see attacks against legacy second-factor authentication, such as SMS, continue, as will attacks against push-based multi-factor authentication solutions. Phishing and other attacks designed to capture authentication tokens will also rise.

    What Else Will 2023 Bring?

    Though the 2023 cyber forecast has become clearer, the current wild card is a potential looming recession and how the uncertain economy will affect cybersecurity spending – and attackers’ motivations. The early months of 2023 should provide insight into the direction the economy is likely to take. But no matter what the economy does, organizations that continue to prioritize cybersecurity will continue to reduce their risk of business disruption and reputational loss from major breaches.

    Why Cybersecurity Should Be Top Of Mind In 2023

    As we dive into Q1, executives are thinking carefully about priorities for their operations, internal business processes and budgets. In many cases, cybersecurity will not top these lists. This could have serious consequences: Globally, the number of enterprise-level cyber attacks has risen exponentially in the past year; recent estimates put these numbers at around 500 million worldwide. In 2021, of the total number of entities attacked, 16% were hacked once, but 60% were hacked twice or more. In September 2022 alone, hackers successfully gained access to and compromised 35 million files, targeting companies’ “crown jewels” (flagship assets, highly sensitive files, or data).

    Breaches caused by ransomware in particular have increased not only in number (by 41% in 2022 alone), but in cost. The “ransom” for these breaches—that is, the amount the attacker requests in exchange for a company’s stolen assets, files, data, or systems—has become increasingly expensive, averaging over $800,000 per attack in 2021. By comparison, that number was closer to $500 in 2016. And the total cost to companies for the entire recovery effort averages $1.4 million. Small businesses are also significantly impacted: 43% of data breaches involve small businesses, leading 60% of these businesses to file for bankruptcy within six months of the attack.

    Viewed as a criminal “industry,” cybercrime is now expected to amount to 1-2% of the global GDP, or $1-2 trillion—and that number is expected to grow with each passing year. Intellectual property theft has also become part of the cybercrime ecosystem; Mark Warner, head of the U.S. Select Committee on Intelligence, has said that the United States alone loses $600 billion annually in IP theft.

    Due to the growing frequency, sophistication, and magnitude of cybercrime events, it is more and more difficult to safeguard an enterprise from breaches such as ransomware attacks. As a result, executives who do not make plans to prioritize cybersecurity are not just taking a passive risk—they are actively courting danger.

    Too Many Footholds On The Wall

    Cyber attacks are crimes of opportunity. Say we view cybersecurity as a metaphorical wall around an organization’s data and systems: A cybercriminal only needs one foothold to climb that wall, and most companies offer them a plethora of possible footholds. For example, a midsize company may have multiple data centers, databases, middleware, and application interfaces, all of which are vulnerable to hacking and ransomware. And then, crucially, they have users—sometimes thousands—each with their own credentials and multiple devices through which they routinely log into the system.

    A hacker may only need one person’s credentials to gain access to company’s data, including the crown jewels. As a result, the effort a hacker must expend to gain access and the effort enterprises must expend to proactively secure their data are notably disproportionate. And that’s the fundamental problem: cybersecurity initiatives are a millimeter deep and a mile wide.

    Enterprises are constantly being attacked. Many can now respond quickly because they’ve made significant investments designed to help them respond to threats. However, until you invest in both response and prevention, you’ll never get ahead of your adversaries.

    Three Tenets Of Cyber Attack Prevention

    Traditional means of securing data and information are no longer sufficient to protect companies’ information assets and crown jewels, which can be stolen by both outsiders and insiders unless prevention strategies get ahead of hackers’ breaching capabilities. While there are many ways to defend, here are three tenets of a well-developed breach prevention strategy:

    1. Keep The ‘Crown Jewels’ Out Of Sight

    Access to the crown jewels and sensitive files, assets, or data must be completely encrypted and kept in digital “sealed enclosures” that are invisible to all but the users with authorized credentials. I recommend using decoy URLs, which look and feel like the actual files, and routing all authorized access through these decoys. The crown jewels must remain in sealed enclosures, ideally in proxy domains to prevent improper access even if credentials are breached. To prevent more sophisticated attacks, each artifact should be exclusively encrypted and permissioned, and activity on the data traceable to harvest forensics. Taking these steps is how you simultaneously leverage all of the three tenets. It is not enough for crown jewels not to be directly accessible to users—they must be invisible.

    2. Maintain Strict And Up-to-Date Permissions

    On the face of it, maintaining up-to-date permissions seems obvious—but it is dependent upon the employees to adhere to the policies. Consider Edward Snowden, who was able to take a large number of files from what was supposedly the most secure facility, the National Security Agency, on his USB drive, and fly out of the country. How was this possible? Because permissions were not enforceable across private stores and untrusted networks. Permissions should automatically expire for ex-employees and previously granted access should immediately be revoked. Moreover, permission status must be consistent across all networks, applications, and domains. I recommend exclusively encrypting each artifact in a sealed enclosure and making permissions automatically consistent and enforceable across untrusted networks—and then maintaining this standard in perpetuity.

    3. Track And Trace Everything

    This essential tip is even referenced in the White House cybersecurity guidelines: Maintain audit logs and traceability for every action that is taken. Consider this practice through the lens of a different area of prevention: traffic violations. How do you enforce speed limits to prevent someone from driving 100 miles an hour when they don’t see police cars around? You install cameras everywhere, and say, “Don’t speed—these cameras are watching you.” In cybersecurity, audit logs function the same way. Every action taken is automatically recorded in the log, along with the identity of the actor. Simply keeping that log can itself significantly reduce the number of breaches, both from inside as well as outside the company.

    While there are, of course, more intricate strategies for cybersecurity, these tenets are the most basic, non-negotiable steps for fortifying a system against breaches and attacks. And yet, not enough company heads are taking steps to proactively mitigate risks, in spite of the magnitude of the threats their systems face. As executives review their budgets for the coming year, cybersecurity must not be simply a “nice to have.” Instead, protecting enterprise IP, data and valuable assets must be a business priority.
