    ChatGPT is Back in Italy After Addressing Data Privacy Concerns

    OpenAI, the company behind ChatGPT, has officially made a return to Italy after the company met the data protection authority’s demands ahead of April 30, 2023, deadline.

    The development was first reported by the Associated Press. OpenAI’s CEO, Sam Altman, tweeted, “we’re excited ChatGPT is available in [Italy] again!”

    The reinstatement comes following Garante’s decision to temporarily block access to the popular AI chatbot service in Italy on March 31, 2023, over concerns that its practices are in violation of data protection laws in the region.

    Generative AI systems like ChatGPT and Google Bard primarily rely on huge amounts of information freely available on the internet as well as the data its users provide over the course of their interactions.

    OpenAI, which published a new FAQ, said it filters and removes information such as hate speech, adult content, sites that primarily aggregate personal information, and spam.

    It also emphasized that it doesn’t “actively seek out personal information to train our models” and that it “will not use any personal information in training information to build profiles about people, to contact them, to advertise to them, to try to sell them anything, or to sell the information itself.”

    That said, the company acknowledged that ChatGPT responses may include personal information about public figures and other individuals whose details are accessible on the public internet.

    European users who wish to object to such processing of their personal information can do so by filling out an online form, and even exercise their right to correct, restrict, delete, or transfer their personal information contained within its training dataset.

    The Garante, in a related announcement, said OpenAI also agreed to include an option to verify users’ ages to confirm they are above 18 prior to gaining access to ChatGPT, or, alternatively, have obtained the consent of parents or guardians if aged between 13 and 18.

    OpenAI is further expected to implement a more robust age verification system to screen minors from accessing the service, with the watchdog noting that it will continue its “fact-finding activities regarding OpenAI” as part of a task force set up by the European Data Protection Board (EDPB).

    The move also follows OpenAI’s introduction of a new privacy setting that allows users to turn off chat history as well as an export option to access the kinds of information stored by ChatGPT.

    OpenAI launches bug bounty program with rewards up to $20K

    AI research company OpenAI announced today the launch of a new bug bounty program to allow registered security researchers to discover vulnerabilities in its product line and get paid for reporting them via the Bugcrowd crowdsourced security platform.

    As the company revealed today, the rewards are based on the reported issues’ severity and impact, and they range from $200 for low-severity security flaws up to $20,000 for exceptional discoveries.

    “The OpenAI Bug Bounty Program is a way for us to recognize and reward the valuable insights of security researchers who contribute to keeping our technology and company secure,” OpenAI said.

    “We invite you to report vulnerabilities, bugs, or security flaws you discover in our systems. By sharing your findings, you will play a crucial role in making our technology safer for everyone.”

    However, while the OpenAI Application Programming Interface (API) and its ChatGPT artificial-intelligence chatbot are in-scope targets for bounty hunters, the company asked researchers to report model issues via a separate form unless they have a security impact.

    “Model safety issues do not fit well within a bug bounty program, as they are not individual, discrete bugs that can be directly fixed. Addressing these issues often involves substantial research and a broader approach,” OpenAI said.

    “To ensure that these concerns are properly addressed, please report them using the appropriate form, rather than submitting them through the bug bounty program. Reporting them in the right place allows our researchers to use these reports to improve the model.”

    Other issues that are out of scope include jailbreaks and safety bypasses that ChatGPT users have been exploiting to trick the ChatGPT chatbot into ignoring the safeguards implemented by OpenAI engineers.

    ​Last month, OpenAI disclosed a ChatGPT payment data leak the company blamed on a bug in the Redis client open-source library bug used by its platform.

    Because of the bug, ChatGPT Plus subscribers began seeing other users’ email addresses on their subscription pages. Following an increasing stream of user reports, OpenAI took the ChatGPT bot offline to investigate an issue.

    In a post-mortem published days later, the company explained that the bug caused the ChatGPT service to expose chat queries and personal information for roughly 1.2% of Plus subscribers.

    The exposed info included subscriber names, email addresses, payment addresses, and partial credit card information.

    “The bug was discovered in the Redis client open-source library, redis-py. As soon as we identified the bug, we reached out to the Redis maintainers with a patch to resolve the issue,” OpenAI said.

    While the company didn’t link today’s announcement with this recent incident, the issue would’ve potentially been discovered earlier, and the data leak might’ve been avoided if OpenAI already had a running bug bounty program to allow researchers to test its products for security flaws.

    Teach ChatGPT your writing style

    Using follow-up prompts to improve results

    Follow-up prompts can help you get closer to your desired result by giving you different options.     AI Chatbots Are Coming to Search Engines. Can You Trust Them?

    Google, Microsoft and Baidu are using tools similar to ChatGPT to turn Internet searches into a conversation. How will this change humanity’s relationship with machines?

    Months after the chatbot ChatGPT wowed the world with its uncanny ability to write essays and answer questions like a human, artificial intelligence (AI) is coming to Internet search.

    Three of the world’s biggest search engines — Google, Bing and Baidu — last week said they will be integrating ChatGPT or similar technology into their search products, allowing people to get direct answers or engage in a conversation, rather than merely receiving a list of links after typing in a word or question. How will this change the way people relate to search engines? Are there risks to this form of human–machine interaction?

    Microsoft’s Bing uses the same technology as ChatGPT, which was developed by OpenAI of San Francisco, California. But all three companies are using large language models (LLMs). LLMs create convincing sentences by echoing the statistical patterns of text they encounter in a large database. Google’s AI-powered search engine, Bard, announced on 6 February, is currently in use by a small group of testers. Microsoft’s version is widely available now, although there is a waiting list for unfettered access. Baidu’s ERNIE Bot will be available in March.

    Before these announcements, a few smaller companies had already released AI-powered search engines. “Search engines are evolving into this new state, where you can actually start talking to them, and converse with them like you would talk to a friend,” says Aravind Srinivas, a computer scientist in San Francisco who last August co-founded Perplexity — an LLM-based search engine that provides answers in conversational English.

    CHANGING TRUST

    The intensely personal nature of a conversation — compared with a classic Internet search — might help to sway perceptions of search results. People might inherently trust the answers from a chatbot that engages in conversation more than those from a detached search engine, says Aleksandra Urman, a computational social scientist at the University of Zurich in Switzerland.

    A 2022 study1 by a team based at the University of Florida in Gainesville found that for participants interacting with chatbots used by companies such as Amazon and Best Buy, the more they perceived the conversation to be human-like, the more they trusted the organization.

    That could be beneficial, making searching faster and smoother. But an enhanced sense of trust could be problematic given that AI chatbots make mistakes. Google’s Bard flubbed a question about the James Webb Space Telescope in its own tech demo, confidently answering incorrectly. And ChatGPT has a tendency to create fictional answers to questions to which it doesn’t know the answer — known by those in the field as hallucinating.

    A Google spokesperson said Bard’s error “highlights the importance of a rigorous testing process, something that we’re kicking off this week with our trusted-tester programme”. But some speculate that, rather than increasing trust, such errors, assuming they are discovered, could cause users to lose confidence in chat-based search. “Early perception can have a very large impact,” says Sridhar Ramaswamy, a computer scientists based in Mountain View, California and chief executive of Neeva, an LLM-powered search engine launched in January. The mistake wiped $100 billion from Google’s value as investors worried about the future and sold stock.

    LACK OF TRANSPARENCY

    Compounding the problem of inaccuracy is a comparative lack of transparency. Typically, search engines present users with their sources — a list of links — and leave them to decide what they trust. By contrast, it’s rarely known what data an LLM trained on — is it Encyclopaedia Britannica or a gossip blog?

    “It’s completely untransparent how [AI-powered search] is going to work, which might have major implications if the language model misfires, hallucinates or spreads misinformation,” says Urman.

    If search bots make enough errors, then, rather than increasing trust with their conversational ability, they have the potential to unseat users’ perceptions of search engines as impartial arbiters of truth, Urman says.

    She has conducted as-yet unpublished research that suggests current trust is high. She examined how people perceive existing features that Google uses to enhance the search experience, known as ‘featured snippets’, in which an extract from a page that is deemed particularly relevant to the search appears above the link, and ‘knowledge panels’ — summaries that Google automatically generates in response to searches about, for example, a person or organization. Almost 80% of people Urman surveyed deemed these features accurate, and around 70% thought they were objective.

    Chatbot-powered search blurs the distinction between machines and humans, says Giada Pistilli, principal ethicist at Hugging Face, a data-science platform in Paris that promotes the responsible use of AI. She worries about how quickly companies are adopting AI advances: “We always have these new technologies thrown at us without any control or an educational framework to know how to use them.”

    Some advocates predict ChatGPT will result in automating jobs away from human beings, although critics have argued that AI and robotics do not yet have the capability for that.

    But already, some schools and universities have responded by limiting or banning its use by students.

    Google owner Alphabet Inc announced on Monday it would launch its own chatbot service called Bard and more artificial intelligence for its search engine as well as developers.

    Chinese tech giant Baidu Inc said on Tuesday it would complete internal testing of its own ChatGPT-style project called “Ernie” in March.
